Watercolour, Acrylic or Oils – What’s the difference?

Acrylic

PROS
– Fast drying
– Water based
– Works on most surfaces
– Cheap starter options
– Easy to layer once dried
– Can be used in mixed media projects

CONS
– Has a milky film that dries clear making it challenging to match dry and wet paint for reworking
– Some of the cheaper brands can be quite thin

Watercolour

PROS
– Fast drying
– Water based
– Cheap starter options
– Can be reworked at any point after drying
– Works best on paper created specifically for watercolour

CONS
– Once dried can be destroyed by water
– Can cause pilling or holes in paper if too much water is applied

Oils

PROS
– Slow drying (can also be a con if you are impatient like me)
– Easy to blend
– Can be manipulated to create very thin or very thick consistencies making it fun to experiment

CONS
– Requires specialty solvents to manipulate texture
– More expensive
– Best used on canvas or other firm surfaces
– Strong smell
